Omega Sign and Veraguth’s Fold in Depression | A Simple Explanation

 What are Omega Sign and Veraguth’s Fold in Depression ?

Everybody is familiar with term Depression, Depression is very commonly present among the General Population. We often see persons suffering from mental health issues in our society.

When a person suffers from period of depression he may experience some specific symptoms i.e. low mood, lack of interest in any activity etc. These all symptoms are subjective and so cannot be observed by other individuals, but Omega Sign and Veraguth’s Fold are two important signs which can be observed by other individuals.

Omega Sign -

So, let’s talk about Omega Sign first. Ever heard of Omega Symbol in Mathematics, yes that Omega Symbol that we all have seen in our high school. So basically in Severe Depression (Melancholia), an omega like structure can be seen on the forehead of depressive person. This structure is made up by facial muscles contraction. 

To give you all a clear understanding of omega sign, I am adding a picture which shows omega-sign in a depressive person.



It occurs due to continuous contraction of corrugated muscle of the brow. Sometimes Omega Sign is present along with Veraguth’s Fold.

Veraguth’s Fold-

A triangular fold can be seen between eyelid and upper part of nose. This sign was introduced by Otto Veraguth. He first attributed this sign to Melancholia. Melancholia term is used to represent severe depression.
