 Routes of Drug Administration



1. Oral 
• Drug is placed into mouth to be swallowed
• Commonly used Route
2. Sublingual Route
• Drug is placed under the tongue to be dissolved.
• e.g. Tab - NTG

3. Buccal Route
• Drug is placed in mouth against the wall of cheek (b/w Cheek and Gums )
• It produces Local and Systemic effect.

4. Inhalation
• A vapor form of drug is inhaled into airway through nose and mouth.
• Fastest route of drug absorbtion.
• e.g. Bronchodilator, chloroform, ether.

5. Innuction (Topical Application)
• Applying  a Semi Solid drug over skin by Friction / Rubbing.
• e.g. Ointment, Liniment

6. Instillation
• Placing a liquid drug into body cavity 
• e.g. Instillation of eye/ear drops.

7. Insertion
• Placing a solid drug into body cavity
• e.g. Suppository

8. Implantation
• Placing a solid drug in b/w tissues
• e.g. Norplant, Brachytherapy

9. Insufflation
• Placing a vapor / powder / gas form of drug into body cavity  or wound.
• To easily visualise a structure
• e.g. Co2 Insufflation used in Laparoscopic Examination

10. Hypospray
• Spraying of drug by Jet Injector through skin into tissue without any Injections
• e.g. Insulin, Certain Vaccines

11. Parenteral
• Para + Enterone

• Injecting drug outside the intestine at various target sites.
• e.g. IM, IV, Sc etc.
